24.02.08 - Vengence Important Announcement: Switching Hosts
Hopefully that's grabbed everyone's attention as this news affects everyone. Smile

Firstly I feel I must apologise for the slow speed of this site over recent months. Unfortunately, this is completely out of my hands but it has been clearly visible if not to our host. I fear we have reached a dead-end with our current hosting solution, who will not accept responsibility for the terrible service (although I have identified the site that is DOS attacking all the other sites on the box) and the service we have been getting is below any acceptable standard. As such we will be seeking hosting elsewhere, which is always a pain and will unfortunately result in some downtime.

The process we will take is:
  • We will locate a host and configure the domain to host www.dead-donkey.com , www2.dead-donkey.com , forum.dead-donkey.com and scifi.dead-donkey.com
  • The required software will be configured and the site brought up and tested
  • Once we have established a level of quality service and the site is tested, we will lock the databases on our current host
  • A clean backup will be made and migrated to the replacement box
  • The site will be brought up and tested on the remote box
  • The nameservers for the domain will be changed to the new service provider
  • On a variety of ed2k sites notification of a temporary hosts file fix will be made that will allow you to instantly access the site without waiting for the DNS to be propagated to your ISP. I would appreciate the distribution of this information, as well as at a later date notification that the hosts file fix is no longer needed.
  • The above information will also be posted at https://www.bothanspies.com/service/status.html as well as details on clearing out local caches.

The estimated downtime will be between 1 and 2 days.

That should provide a solid migration strategy, and hopefully provide a level of quality service that dead-donkey has been starved of over the past months.

During the migration the following feature enhancement will be applied:

  • forum.dead-donkey.com will be upgraded to phpbb3
  • scifi.dead-donkey.com will be upgraded to the latest phpbb2
  • The frontpage parsing engine will be upgraded to phpbb3

I ask that after the migration is done, all bugs be reported in the Site Development forum Smile
It might also take a while to get the theme 'feeling' like its old self.

Regards phpbb3, do you already have the HTML plugin or addin (I'm not experienced in this kinda thing) ready to set up? I've noticed that SBIG has switched over & they have yet to impliment anything for HTML & the site definately looks a bit odd... narrow like scifi & the avatars have blown up to a massive size.

A welcome upgrade SPud, thanks for all you effort, this place is great Very Happy And now It will be even better! Very Happy

Are you planning on upgrading scifi some day? And also what kind of user profile mods might be using for HHAH?

@BadBugs-
Regarding the sbig comments, that new look (squished into center) is a stylistic choice, that layout I find easier to read on a large WS LCD monitor and helps keep 'experience' compatibility for those on 4:3 (which will have less empty sidebars). And the choice to disable HTML (with allowance for specific usergroups) was a good one too, and I'm actually glad Spud choose to this also. With phpbb3 you won't need it much, but the old collections and video linking are trickier, or at least it seems to me now.

@BadBugs-
check your user settings to change the res of your avatar.

And the html is only enabled for a selective few users. Since it is a security risk.

Shit, i hate phpbb3, but i hope you'll make it look good enough... i mean - dead-donkey enough, not so "pop=looking" how they are. But well, ok, hopefully nothing will be losed. Strenght in all this job, spud

Title: An idea I had
Comment:

Hi spud! Thanks for the effort considering the update and changing the ISP.

I had the following idea: How about you post the IP of the dead-donkey server once you know it and we could bookmark the IP - so we will instantly (and always) find the way to the site. Smile

Unfortunate that the hosts are useless, but thanks for all your efforts Spud, you are a top fella.
