13.09.10 - Alex de la Iglesia wins best director award in Ven
Alex de la Iglesia
A Sad Trumpet Ballad (2010)

https://i37.tinypic.com/23jh6bo.png Basque director Alex de la Iglesia won the award to the best director of the Venice Film festival for "Balada Triste de Trompeta" (The Last Circus), a horror film doubling as a metaphor for fascist Spain that split critics. The Basque director also won the best screenplay award for the film.

Set in 1973, the film is a parody of the Spanish civil war and tells the story of two very different clowns played by Carlos Areces and Antonio De La Torre, who are in love with the same woman and will go to any lengths to win her affection.

Iglesia describes the film as "a strange combination of love, black comedy and horror." The original idea was spawned from dreams Iglesia was having about clowns.

It's the story of the war, and the struggle Spanish people have faced, which drove Iglesia to write the film and ironically he didn't like clowns when he was growing up but thinks they are the perfect vision to tell the story. https://i33.tinypic.com/z5vnm.png (EITB)

Title: Just saw this...
Comment:

...at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival.) Blew me away - his best ever, maybe!

See:

- a circus troupe attack and wipe out a regiment of Fascists!
- two Killer Clowns commit murder, mayhem and self-mutilation for love of a beautiful girl!
- a Kojack-themed burlesque house (the horror!!)

Plus: General Francisco Franco lives - and he's a kindly old humanitarian (sort of!)
