A comet wipes out most of life on Earth, leaving two Valley Girls to fight the evil types who survive.
A minor gem and true relic of the 80's, "Night of the Comet" follows the exploits of two very likeable valley girls after a comet seemingly turns everybody else but them into red dust or a marauding zombie. Eventually they get entangled with an extremely ruthless government project to save the remaining survivors (the loose definition of "survivors" only including the people involved in the project)...but I'm skipping ahead. This is a great, surprisingly funny movie, with tongue-in-cheek dialogue and situations that have you laughing unexpectedly throughout. The acting is solid, the film well produced and intelligently directed on a tight budget, and cheaply exploitive sex and gore nowhere to be found; we are left with a slightly uneven but very watchable story. What helps most are the appealing, believable characters who make us laugh not by acting like idiots, but by spitting in the eye of the situation surrounding them. There is a serious undertone (99% of the world's population is dead, after all), but it's handled very well, deftly combined (and contrasting) with comedy to make for a complete bullseye. This is a wonderful update of the apocalypse flick, a B-movie that warrants at least a B+. To put in another way, you just haven't lived until you've seen a cheerleader operating an Uzi.
