Many years after two summer camp councilers are killed at Camp Crystal Lake, the owner decides to reopen, which sparks a series of grisly murders.
In 1957, a young boy named Jason drowned at Camp Crystal Lake. In 1958, the teenagers supposedly responsible are murdered by an unknown assailant. The camp closed, but in 1980 it is reopened by Steve Christie, who hires a few teenagers to be councillors. Mayhem happens when each one is murdered one by one by an unknown killer
In 1957, a young boy drowns at Camp Crystal Lake, the next year, two counselors are murdered by an unseen person, and the story flashes forward to Friday June 13th, "Present Day" which has Camp Crystal Lake opening again. The counselors are killed off one by one, again by an unseen person. The killer is revealed to the lone survivor, and the movie comes back with a surprise ending.
Twenty-two years ago a small boy drowned while attending a summer camp on Crystal Lake. The camp was shut down soon after the incident but has recently been re-opened by a young couple. The local residents have not yet recovered from the tragedy, and they warn the young counselors not to stay. While preparing the camp for the summer season the kids begin to disappear, one by one, as a murderer attempts to stop the rebirth of Camp Crystal Lake.

Totally overrated but this is a defining slasher movie and a bit of "must see" horror.

The plot is well-known by now--a bunch of attractive 20 somethings are
slaughtered at a summer camp by the possessed mother of a little boy (Jason)
who died there years ago.
This was a huge hit with teenagers in 1980 and spun the slasher film craze
(which started with "Halloween" in 1978) into orbit.It's not exactly a
great film (the plot is pretty dumb), but it's a hundred times better than
its sequels and clones and, in a way, is a true classic of the horror
genre.
The acting isn't half bad--there's a pre-stardom Kevin Bacon and good
performances by Adrienne King, Harry Crosby (who won't even discuss the film
nowadays) and Betsy Palmer (who called the script "a piece of s***").The
setting itself is beautiful (I believe it was shot in the NY-NJ area) and
there's some good direction by Sean Cunningham.There's the now infamous
music (which I find really scary) and the murders are gory and very
well-executed (sorry!).The effects are uncomfortably realistic--I vividly
remember a large portion of the audience walking out back in 1980 when a
woman gets an axe in her face.The script is not too bad and this movie is
nowhere near as sexist as later slashers.In this film an equal number of
women AND men are killed--in later films it was all women.And the women in
this film are intelligent, attractive and not just screaming bimbos.Also
unlike later slashers which had needless sex scenes, this movie only has one
and it's fairly tasteful with only a few flashes of nudity.The climatic
fight between Palmer and King is exciting and still pretty strong stuff and
Jason's final jump out of the water still packs a jolt.
