Carnival Of Souls (1998)

Remake of the original, which is from 1962. This one is promoted with the name of "Wes Craven" in the hope that many will have a look at it. Rest assured that you don't missed anything if you haven't seen it yet.

Carnival Of Souls is about a girl with tormenting memories about her "stepfather". In some scenes - which seem like ghost apperances - that male person is also continuously appearing near her. This is driving the girl mad so she decides to visit a now closed circus where her stepfahter used to work as a clown. This is also the place where they first met and where her mother also met the man.

The only highlight in this movie are a few spooky scenes with phantomlike characters in it. Other than that it's pretty boring and forgettable. Nevertheless I still consider it a tad better than the original, because that one is even slower paced and completely lacks the spooky phantom scenes mentioned before. So if you had the choice to see one of them: pick this one.

All the actors do quite well here. There is a small role for "Cleavant Derricks" in it, whom you might know as the cool black guy from the Sliders series. At the very end the movie leaves it open to the viewer to judge whether everything that has been seen was actually happening, just a memory or a "post-death soul confrontation-like experience". This is cool, but a letdown if you expected something else. So after having read this you shouldn't. Wink
