Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a brutal film directed by John McNaughton from 1986 that loosely chronicles events
based on a period in the existance of real-life serial killer Henry Lee Lucas. Michael Rooker plays the role of Henry and
pulls it off with powerful and convincing finesse. His sidekick and partner-in-crime, Otis Toole, played by Tom Towles, is
equally eerie and plays a crucial and unforgettable role in this film.
To keep it short and to the point, this film is about a week in the life of Henry - a drifter, a loner, a cold-hearted
killer. Henry rolls into town leaving behind a wake of blood of innocent victims and soon meets up with former prison mate
Otis Toole. The boys shack up for a bit at Otis' apartment and then Becky, Otis' little sister comes to visit and ends up
staying with the guys. What follows is a look into the dysfunctional and sociopathic lifestyle Henry lives and how it spills
over into the lives of Otis and Becky. Henry has a compulsion to kill other people and he in a sense recruits Otis as his
accomplice, teaching him the 'thrill of the kill'. Before long they are videotaping their massacres and watching these
tapes back at the apartment until their makeshift family unit begins to crumble. One event leads to another and eventually
an altercation between Otis and his sister Becky (where Otis rapes her) forces Henry to intervene. The outcome is bloody and
final.
There's a little more to it than that but the story of this film is known well enough and I basically suck at keeping things
brief so that's my attempt at describing what I consider to be one of the best 'serial killer' horror films of all-time.
Most people are likely to be somewhat familiar with this film already and the only reason I bothered to rip and share it is
due to the fact that the source is the new 20th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition DVD which I recently got. In addition to
the film itself I ripped disc 2 which features documentaries, director's commentaries, and Henry original theatrical
trailers. I'm aware that this film has been shared before but I have not seen this version circulating as of yet so why
not get a copy out there for fans of the film.
Please be aware that Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was originally shot on 16mm film which gave it a 'grainy' quality.
This transferred to the DVD and hence the rip itself so I just wanted to mention that it is not a result of encoding but
rather the DVD source itself. If anything it lends the film some enhanced ambience.
Enjoy this great film.
