A mining ship, investigating an SOS, lands on a distant planet. The crew discovers some strange creatures and investigates.
Ridley Scott's original masterpiece, critically acclaimed and rightly so. This has to be one of my favourite horror movies commited to film. Cinematography is pure class, the number of distinct shots in this film alone is breathtaking and each one is pieced together perfectly to build atmospheric tension not seen in many films.
The script, started with a Roger Corman style b-movie, but morphed into a work of art, with some of the most memorable scenes in film history, and a character that created the strongest female lead in movie history (which continued in the sequels)
There is a lot of criticism surrounding the addition of material for this director's cut, much in the way of the addition material inserted into Aliens; the claim is that the material slows the film down. However, in this instance, although the most significant change comes at the end, I believe the pacing really isn't effected enough to dimish the film. The sequence adds consistancy for the sequels, but more importantly, adds another layer of horror to the situation.
My preference lies in this reworked director's cut.
