After enlisting as a volunteer in a war in 14th century Japan, his wife and mother remain living in a swamp. They eke out their living by ambushing worn-out warriors, killing them and selling their belongings to a greedy merchant. The woman comes to mistrust her daughter-in-law who has coupled up with a deserter, and begins to wear a facial mask she has taken from a slain samurai. Soon the mask will not come off again. In this disguise she is at first taken for a demon by her daughter.
A real Japanese movie gem, and one of the foundation movies of Japanese horror. For those looking for a classic horror movie from Japan, then this is a true classic that simply must be seen!
"This multilayered allegory of a film isn't scary and quite possibly it never intended to be. It isn't a horror movie or even a drama: Onibaba is more of a moving painting, a visceral, realistic and carnal artwork representing the stigmata of A-Bomb victims after World War II. It needs to be seen to be believed. I braced myself for boredom when I started watching this, but ended up mesmerized to the very end. Those that are prudish should stay away, as the film has much nudity and violence. None of that is gratuitious or exploitative however... it all makes sense in the context when you think of it. So take my advice and watch it, contemplate and discuss. A true masterpiece."
